'Men's shirt puts Sherie on top'
Sherie Muys is taking the traditional men’s shirt from boardroom to the catwalk.
The 20-year-old has been named the 2006 Deutz Fashion Ambassador, a major national award for the best up and coming designers.
The Hillsborough student is still overwhelmed by her prize that includes a return ticket to London in February to work with a top designer of her choice, $3000 towards the trip and a laptop.
"It's a massive opportunity beyond my wildest dreams," she says.
"I'm sort of on cloud nine, or even above that. It's all quite surreal."
She will also debut in the AUT Rookie show at the Air New Zealand Fashion Week this Friday with a collection inspired by the white shirt.
She impressed the judges with her range of women’s white shirts, based on the men’s shirt.
"My final designs capture a sense of feminine sophistication which is set off by the male clothing" Sherie says.
She’s always known that fashion was what she wanted to do and has creativity in the genes – her mother and sister are interior Designers.
Sherie has been a dresser behind the scenes at Fashion Week before but is looking forward to seeing her creations on the catwalk.
"Backstage is the most exciting part. I love seeing the chaos and real energy before they head on to the runway. I love performing and the whole idea of a show and things being staged."
