Sherie Muys, designer of label sherieyvonne, tells us how winning the Deutz Fashion Ambassador Awards in 2006 exposed her to European fashion culture including a dream trip to attend London Fashion Week...

How did winning Deutz help your success?

The Deutz Fashion Ambassador Awards exposed me to the European fashion culture which I find very interesting. Attending London Fashion Week spurred on valuable thoughts and ideas that I have been able to translate and apply back here at home. Whilst attending PV in Paris I was able to introduce myself as a Designer to fabric suppliers whom I am now working with. Amsterdam opened an opportunity to sell my designs in a recently opened boutique 'Individuals'.

Sherie, what are you working on now?

Since winning the DFDA I have started my own label ‘sherieyvonne’ which is now well under way. I have had to dive head-first into all areas of being a designer, being in production and owning a business. It has certainly been a steep learning curve over the past 6 months.
I have experienced the pressure of deadlines to a whole new scale, knowing that it is not just uni marks on the line this time!

You won an award for your talent in fresh design. What are you inspired by?

It seems inspiration can come from almost anywhere. I have once said before, ideas come from being in touch with all senses. Eyes open or eyes closed, all I need is a bit of an imagination. The AW 07 white shirts stemmed from the laundry, spring/summer 07/08 was taken from a vintage suitcase of classic patterns whilst the latest season AW 08 was inspired by Victor Borge…so it really can come from anywhere!

What do you enjoy working with and designing?

I most enjoy working with natural fabrics, silks, wools, cotton and most of all leather. I love experimenting with hand finishing/treating fabrics. I believe my silk shirt dress with the hand-created print has been spring/summer 0708's biggest seller. The retail prices range from anything between $150-$600.
